We have cruised with Disney Cruise Line before, so we already knew the level of service, attention to detail, and magic that Disney brings to a vacation. But sailing on the Disney Destiny with my boys at 11 and 12 gave me the chance to experience Disney Cruise Line from a different perspective.
At this age, I know a lot of parents start wondering if their kids are getting too old for Disney. Will they still enjoy it? Will there be enough for them to do? Will it feel too young?
After sailing on the Disney Destiny, I can confidently say that Disney magic is not something you outgrow.
My boys absolutely loved this ship.
The Disney Destiny is honestly the perfect Disney ship for boys, especially those who love Marvel. The ship’s Heroes and Villains theme gives it a little more adventure and excitement while still keeping all of the Disney magic families love. The Marvel experiences, characters, and entertainment were some of my boys’ favorite parts of the cruise, and the overall feel of the ship really appealed to them at their age.
One of the things I loved about the Disney Destiny is that it balances classic Disney storytelling with a little more action, adventure, and personality. The Heroes and Villains theme brings in some of Disney’s most memorable characters, and the villains add a fun twist that appeals to both kids and adults. There is something about a good villain that makes a story even more entertaining!
And as a mom, one of my biggest takeaways was that this ship was not too “little kid” for them.
But it also was not too “little kid” for me.
That is one of the biggest misconceptions about Disney Cruise Line. People often assume Disney cruises are only for families with younger children, but that could not be further from the truth. The Disney Destiny has amazing adult spaces, entertainment, dining experiences, and opportunities to relax that make it just as enjoyable for adults traveling without kids as it is for families.
One of my favorite parts of Disney Cruise Line is the rotational dining experience. Instead of eating at the same restaurant every night, guests rotate through different dining venues throughout the sailing, and your serving team rotates with you.
This is such a unique part of the Disney experience because your servers get to know your family throughout the cruise. They remember your preferences, your personalities, and the little details that make your dining experience feel personal.
On the Disney Destiny, we experienced three different dining venues: Pride Lands: Feast of The Lion King, Worlds of Marvel, and 1923.
Our favorite was easily Pride Lands: Feast of The Lion King. We were actually lucky enough to eat there twice during our sailing, and both experiences were incredible. The theming is absolutely beautiful and brings The Lion King to life in such a fun way. The entertainment throughout dinner makes you feel like you are part of the story rather than simply sitting down for a meal.
It was one of those Disney experiences where you find yourself looking around and thinking, “This is why Disney does what they do so well.”
Worlds of Marvel was another huge hit, especially for my boys. If you have Marvel fans in your family, this dining experience is such a fun addition to the cruise. The interactive elements and superhero atmosphere make dinner feel like an experience instead of just a meal.
1923 offered a completely different experience with a more classic and elegant Disney feel. Named after the year The Walt Disney Company was founded, this restaurant celebrates Disney animation history and gives guests a beautiful look into the creativity and storytelling that started it all.
Each restaurant had its own personality, and that is what makes rotational dining so much fun. Every night feels like something new.
One of our dining nights also featured the Pirate Menu, and that was a lot of fun. Everyone gets into the spirit of the evening, and it adds another memorable element to the cruise experience.
One of the things Disney Cruise Line does incredibly well is entertainment, and the Disney Destiny continues that tradition. The Broadway-style productions onboard are a major highlight and another reason this ship appeals to more than just younger kids.
The standout show for us was Disney Hercules. This show is exclusive to the Disney Destiny and brings the classic Hercules story to life in a completely new way. The music, costumes, choreography, humor, and energy make it feel like a true Broadway production at sea.
My boys loved the action and adventure of Hercules, but I was just as entertained. This was not a show that felt like it was only created for kids. It was something our entire family could enjoy together.
The Disney Destiny also features Frozen: A Musical Spectacular and Disney Seas the Adventure, giving guests a great variety of entertainment throughout the sailing. Each production has its own style, but they all showcase the incredible talent, storytelling, and attention to detail Disney is known for.
Of course, no Disney cruise would be complete without Pirate Night!
This was another favorite for our family. Seeing guests dressed up, the energy around the ship, and everyone getting involved in the celebration made the entire evening feel like an event.
The pirate show was a blast, and then came one of the moments that makes Disney Cruise Line so special: fireworks at sea.
There is something truly magical about standing on a ship in the middle of the ocean and watching fireworks light up the night sky. It is one of those memories that sticks with you long after the vacation ends.
The Disney Destiny exceeded my expectations because it gave my boys exactly what they wanted: adventure, Marvel, entertainment, and experiences that felt exciting at their age.
But it also gave me everything I love about Disney Cruise Line: incredible service, thoughtful details, amazing storytelling, and those little touches that make a vacation unforgettable.
If you have boys, Marvel lovers, tweens, teens, or even adults who think Disney cruises are only for little kids, I hope you reconsider. The Disney Destiny proves that Disney magic is not something you outgrow.
Would we sail the Disney Destiny again?
Absolutely.
Why St. Lucia (and Sandals) Stole My Heart
After a 3am wake up call, and a LONG day of flying, stepping into the Sandals lounge at the airport felt like pure relief. It was cool, quiet, and inviting. It was the kind of place that instantly makes you slow down and breathe. We were greeted with smiles, offered drinks, and it truly felt like the vacation started the moment we walked in.
The drive from the airport to Sandals Halcyon was long, but honestly, it didn’t feel wasted. The roads wind up and down through the mountains, past colorful villages, fruit stands, and stretches of lush landscapes that make you want to keep your camera out the whole time. It’s the kind of ride where you see the real St. Lucia outside the resort walls. That being said...if you’re prone to motion sickness, definitely bring Dramamine. Those curves are no joke!
Arriving at Halcyon, we were welcomed with a cold drink and warm hospitality before being personally escorted to our room. That little touch, having someone walk us through the resort and straight to our door, set the tone for the whole stay. What surprised me most was how peaceful it all felt. The resort never seemed crowded, and there were so many quiet spots to just relax and take in the view. My favorite area was the lazy river that was outside of my room. They call it a lazy river, but it is more of a very long skinny pool that is quiet and relaxing. My girlfriends and I spent most of our down time there. Between the calm pools, swaying hammocks, and the soft sound of waves, it felt like our own private escape.
One of the things that really stood out to me was how accommodating the staff were with my food allergies. Every restaurant we visited went out of their way to make sure I felt safe and cared for. Not only did they adjust menu items, but a few times the chefs even prepared completely off-menu meals just for me. That level of thoughtfulness made dining stress-free, and honestly, the food ended up being some of the best meals I’ve had on vacation.
While Halcyon became our home base, I also toured the other two Sandals resorts on the island.
Sandals Regency La Toc sits high on dramatic cliffs with some of the most breathtaking ocean views I’ve ever seen. It feels elegant and grand and is perfect if you’re looking for something a little more luxurious and romantic. It is a dream location for a wedding and/or honeymoon.
Sandals Grande St. Lucian is the opposite vibe. It is big, bold, and lively with a beach that looks straight out of a screensaver. Even with all the activities and energy, I was surprised at how easy it was to find quiet corners here too.
The best part? With Sandals’ Stay at One, Play at Three program, you don’t have to choose. No matter where you stay, you can experience all three resorts—whether that means dining at a new restaurant, relaxing by a different pool, or exploring another stretch of beach.
St. Lucia stole my heart with its mix of culture and beauty, and Sandals made it feel effortless. From the first cold drink in the airport lounge to the last sunset on the beach, it was the kind of trip that stays with you long after you’ve unpacked your bags.
